H. Hardardottir et al., MIXED BACTEREMIA WITH VIBRIO-METSCHNIKOVII IN AN 83-YEAR-OLD FEMALE-PATIENT, Scandinavian journal of infectious diseases, 26(4), 1994, pp. 493-494
An 83-year-old woman suddenly fell ill and was admitted to the hospita
l on suspicion of a heart attack. After admission she developed high f
ever, chills and malaise. Vibrio metschnikovii and Staphylococcus homi
nis were isolated from 2 separately obtained blood cultures. One of th
e cultures also yielded Escherichia coli. The patient's condition impr
oved rapidly after treatment with ampicillin intravenously. To our kno
wledge, this is the fourth reported case of V. metschnikovii bacteremi
a in humans.
