Upholstery leather which was originally smooth is often blamed for str
etching and becoming wavy after use. This phenomenon is known as baggi
ness and is a feature for which upholstery tanners in particular would
like to be able to test. The BLC in conjunction with Stable Micro Sys
tems has developed a method which automatically measures the set or ba
gginess of leathers. The method incorporates the use of a materials te
ster in conjunction with a purpose built jig (see Fig. 1) and speciall
y written software.
