Abstract
The influence of the Lorentz force imposed during solidification on th e structure of Al-4% Cu Alloy has been studied. Castings were poured a nd allowed to solidify under the influence of Lorentz force in CO2 - s and moulds. Macro-structure of some of the test castings solidified wi th and without the influence of Lorentz force is described. Metallogra phic examination indicates that there is an increase in the equiaxed z one accompanied by an extensive refinement of the grain size. The impo sed Lorentz force enhances the convective flow rate and creates condit ions in the melt which favour the development of different structures in the casting.
