The compound 27-bis(2-aminoethoxy)-26,28-dihydroxycalix[4]arene (2) ha
s been synthesized by the borane reduction of 5,11, -26,28-dihydroxyca
lix-26,28-dihydroxycalix[4]arene (1). The protonated alkylammonium for
m of 2 is an effective extractant for transferring the anions CrO42- a
nd Cr2O72- from an aqueous into a chloroform layer. The monoanions Cl-
, CH3CO2- and NO3-, and dianions SO42-, MoO42- and WO42- have little e
ffect on the extraction of CrO42- and CrO72-. Deprotonation of the dia
lkylammonium cation results in reversal with CrO42- and Cr2O72- migrat
ing back into the aqueous layer. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
