A Nd-rich ternary alloy Nd18Fe76B6, which exhibits very high coercivit
y (22 kOe) in the form of as-cast melt-spun ribbon, has been modified
by substitution of 1 at% of Ga for Fe. A substantial enhancement of co
ercivity to > 45 kOe resulted, although the remanence and energy produ
ct were reduced in comparison with the ternary alloy. The coercivity i
ncrease may be related, in part, to grain refinement promoted by Ga bu
t the level of increase was such that other factors probably predomina
ted.
