The formation of gamma-Fe2O3 by thermal decomposition of a mixture of
Fe(II)- and Fe(III)-oxalate salts was investigated using X-ray diffrac
tion, Fe-57 Mossbauer spectroscopy and FT IR spectroscopy. It was foun
d that the ball-milling of the starting chemicals, at the concentratio
n ratio for the Fe3O4 formation, suppressed the formation of alpha-Fe2
O3 as the phase associated with gamma-Fe2O3 during the thermal decompo
sition process. The correlation of the results obtained by X-ray diffr
action, Fe-57 Mossbauer spectroscopy and FT IR spectroscopy was shown.
