In this study a novel finite element modelling of the plane frame-comb
ined footing-soil system, subjected to biaxial loading has been discus
sed. The formulation of an isoparametric interface/joint element which
is used to model the interface characteristics of the foundation beam
and the soil medium has been presented. In addition, some useful sugg
estions have been given regarding the proper selection of the values o
f tangential and shear stiffnesses K(ss) and K(nn) respectively. Final
ly the interactive behaviour of a five storey two bay frame has been s
tudied and is compared with the conventional non-interactive analysis.
The material non-linearity of the soil has been taken into considerat
ion by employing the hyperbolic stress-strain model.
