Abstract
Photolysis of 10,10-dimethylanthrone-2,7-diazide in a glassy matrix at 77 K gives the corresponding quintet dinitrene molecule with a single t ground state (Delta E(S-->Q) = 810 J/mol). This system shows disjoin t exchange behavior in a case where conjugation is assured by an enfor ced planar geometry.
