The authors report two elderly white italian patients affected by onyc
homycosis of the toenails due to Trichophyton soudanense. In both case
s onychomycosis was associated with plantar infection. The affected na
ils showed milky-white leukonychia, without subungual hyperkeratosis a
nd onycholysis. Neither patient, both of whom had been taking low dosa
ges of systemic steroids for several years, had ever been out of italy
nor had had any contact with African immigrants.
