We report an electrooptically tunable, single frequency extended cavit
y laser diode operating at 1 500 nm wavelength. The method is very sim
ple since only three components are used to obtain both mode hopping a
nd continuous tuning. A LiNbO3 crystal acts as a tunable wavelength fi
lter and leads to mode hopping tuning. Continuous tuning is obtained b
y phase modulation with a second LiNbO3 crystal. The linewidth is less
than 250 kHz and the tuning rates are 660 MHz/V for mode hopping and
45 kHz/V for continuous tuning. The principle of operation and the exp
erimental results are discussed.
