The object of this study was to verify experimentally an optimisation
procedure used to reduce the total time needed to obtain an accurate e
stimate of potential alpha energy concentration (PAEC) of Rn-222 proge
ny for a grab sampling method with only one count of gross alpha activ
ity. Samples of air were analysed for potential alpha energy at concen
trations near 2.08 x 10(-6) J.m-3 (0.10 WL) using timing intervals of
7, 13, and 25 min. The measurements were compared graphically and stat
istically to estimates of PAEC obtained using the modified Tsivoglou m
ethod. No statistical differences in accuracy were found within or bet
ween the three total timing intervals. Suggestions for practical field
instrumentation are presented.
