This paper proposes a convex programming method to achieve optimal H(i
nfinity)-state feedback control for continuous-time linear systems. St
ate space conditions, formulated in an appropriate parameter space, de
fine a convex set containing all the stabilizing control gains that gu
arantee an upper bound on the H(infinity)-norm of the closed-loop tran
sfer function. An optimization problem is then proposed, in order to m
inimize this upper bound over the previous convex set, furnishing the
optimal H(infinity)-control gain as its optimal solution. A limiting b
ound for the optimum H(infinity)-norm can easily be calculated, and th
e proposed method will achieve minimum attenuation whenever a feasible
state feedback controller exists. Generalizations to decentralized an
d output feedback control are also investigated. Numerical examples il
lustrate the theory.
