Background: A 44-year-old man who was an intravenous heroin user devel
oped multiple septic emboli, including a choroidal abscess in the macu
la and foot and skin infection after Staphylococcus aureus endocarditi
s. Methods: Prompt administration of systemic oxacillin and gentamicin
was prescribed for the endocarditis. Results: One week after septic e
mbolization to the choroid, a subfoveal, poorly-defined choroidal neov
ascular membrane with retinochoroidal anastomosis was noted at the sit
e of active choroidal infection. Conclusion: Systemic antibiotic thera
py successfully eradicated the choroidal infection, prevented progress
ion to endophthalmitis, and improved visual acuity.
