Jl. Aragon, TRANSITION FROM MULTIPLY TWINNED ICOSACHEDRAL TO CUBOCTAHEDRAL SYMMETRY IN PARTICLES IN ARBITRARY SIZE, Chemical physics letters, 226(3-4), 1994, pp. 263-267
A mechanism based on rotations in six dimensions is applied to the con
tinuous transformation of the Mackay icosahedron to cuboctahedron. The
approach is valid for particles with any number of atoms. The evoluti
on is parametrized by just one parameter and a continuum of intermedia
te structures is obtained. A small energy barrier between these struct
ures exists under a Lennard-Jones potential.
