Abstract
A simple method for screening bacteria for diacetyl and acetoin produc tion was developed. This method is based on the ability of diacetyl an d acetoin to form a red insoluble complex with alpha-naphthol in the p resence of creatine. Addition of carboxymethyl-cellulose containing ca lcium citrate in the medium allowed discrimination between citrate uti lizing and non-utilizing bacteria.
