The Landesanstalt fur Immissionsschutz NRW (State Agency fur Air Pollu
tion Control and Noise Abatement in North-Rhine Westphalia) investigat
ed the emission of PCDD/PCDF from domestic heating equipment. The aim
was to estimate the contribution of the total emission of PCDD/PCDF in
the Federal Republic of Germany excluding the new eastern states. For
the investigations a burner for natural gas, an oil burner, a stove f
or solid fuels, and an open fireplace were available. It was found tha
t the contribution of domestic heating to the total emission of PCDD/P
CDF is of low significance compared with other sources. It amounts to
less than 20 g per year (expressed as TE Nato CCMS). The specific emis
sion values obtained for the various fuels differed considerably.
