The fabrication of optical waveguides in sapphire by the thermal diffu
sion of titanium is reported. Singlemode operation at lambda = 633nm w
as observed following diffusion at 1950+30 degrees C for up to 3.5h, W
aveguide mode intensity profiles are given and mode depths between 6.2
and 9.6 mu m +/- 1 mu m were obtained in the TE polarisation.
