Two surveys were administered to pupils enrolled in an independent sec
ondary school in Melbourne, Australia. The first instrument, completed
by seventy-four pupils from three year levels, comprised a series of
specific statements. The second instrument, completed by twelve pupils
from one year level, consisted of four open-ended questions. A majori
ty of pupils were found to have a clear understanding of the purpose a
nd nature of teaching practice, and particular role expectations for v
arious personnel involved in it. The implications for school-based tea
cher education programs are discussed
