Abstract
A cross sectional multicenter study was performed in order to evaluate the relationship between nutritional status and different dialysis te chniques, membranes and buffer of dialysate in 761 hemodialysis patien ts. We found a high prevalence of malnutrition, defined by anthropomet ric parameters (75,3 % of patients). We used, to stablish the nutritio nal status in our patients, anthropometric, biochemical and urea kinet ic parameters. The patients were grouped according to a) the technique of dialysis-conventional Hemodialysis (HD) or hemodialfiltration (HDF ), b) membrane type (cellulosic or shyntetic) and c) the type of buffe r of the dialysate (bicarbonate or acetate). Globally, patients on HDF , synthetic membranes and dialysate with bicarbonate showed worst anth ropometric and biochemical status. However, these patients had a highe r Kt/V and PCRn. Furthemore, patients with a higher score of co-morbid ity, older and with longer stay on dialysis, and consequently worst nu trition status, were preferently treated with HDF, synthetic membranes and dialysate of bicarbonate. Due to the characteristics of the study , and the bias introduced in the selection of the patients, we were un able to discriminate the relative influence of each factor in the nutr itional status of the patients.
