Abstract
Recent experiments on evanescent electromagnetic waves seem to detect superluminal propagation. The analogous quantum mechanic tunneling pro blem is examined here. I introduce a time dependent perturbation and s tudy its effect on the transmitted probability density and retardation time. The results are generalized to relativistic quantum mechanics a nd electromagnetic wave propagation. No genuine superluminal effects a re found.
