P. Cromwell et K. Mcelrath, BUYING STOLEN PROPERTY - AN OPPORTUNITY PERSPECTIVE, Journal of research in crime and delinquency, 31(3), 1994, pp. 295-310
This study is based on findings from a self-report survey regarding pa
rticipation in the crime of knowingly buying stolen property by ordina
ry, otherwise honest individuals. Of the sample, 17% reported having b
ought stolen goods in the past; 12% reported being motivated to buy st
olen merchandise; another 15% were unsure whether they would buy stole
n property if offered. The data support an opportunity perspective of
the crime of knowingly buying stolen goods. Having previously purchase
d stolen property was significantly related to whether the respondent
had an opportunity to buy (had been offered) and whether one was motiv
ated (would buy if offered) to buy stolen goods.
