Nasal carriage of Staphylococcus aureus represents a risk for infectio
ns in chronic hemodialysis patients. The advantage to use local chemop
rophylaxis for eradication of carriage has been reported and discussed
. This study carried out at the hemodialysis center of CH Valenciennes
reports die prevalence and the incidence of S. aureus carriage. We pr
opose a strategy for mupirocin prophylaxis based on risk factors relat
ed to hemodialysis patients (vascular access site, previously document
ed staphylococcal infection, significant carriage) and to the clinical
and microbiological follow-up. Activity of antibiotics, including mup
irocin, against S. aureus strains were assessed (mupirocin MIC90 = 0,1
25 mg/l). The aim of the phenotyping study of the strains was to deter
mine more precisely the epidemiological factors of several patients.
