Gs. Storwick et al., PYODERMATITIS-PYOSTOMATITIS VEGETANS - A SPECIFIC MARKER FOR INFLAMMATORY BOWEL-DISEASE, Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, 31(2), 1994, pp. 336-341
In pyodermatitis-pyostomatitis vegetans annular pustular cutaneous les
ions may precede, accompany, or follow the usually extensive vegetatin
g oral disease. Sometimes only cutaneous or only oral lesions occur an
d previously have been described as separate entities. Clinical, histo
pathologic, and immunopathologic evidence clearly indicates this is on
e disease and suggests that it is distinct from pemphigus vegetans. Th
e association between pyodermatitis-pyostomatitis vegetans and inflamm
atory bowel disease, most commonly ulcerative colitis, has been amply
confirmed. Pyodermatitis-pyostomatitis vegetans should be considered a
marker for inflammatory bowel disease.
