It is shown experimentally that the gas produced on perforated plate e
lectrodes in water electrolysis cells is generated in the gap between
the electrode and the diaphragm. Under a minimum diameter of the perfo
rations no gas evolution is observed; the bubbles block the perforatio
ns. For hydrogen evolving electrodes, this minimum diameter is about 2
00 mum. The gap between the diaphragm and the electrode should be of t
he same order of magnitude.
