Sorption of silver from solutions by cells of Candida utilis was studi
ed. X-ray microanalysis showed that individual yeast cells in a batch
culture differ greatly in silver sorption capacity. The amount of sorb
ed silver was larger the higher the phosphorous content in the particu
lar cell. No dependance of silver sorption capacity of individual cell
s on the content of S, Cl, or K was revealed. Silver sorption was acco
mpanied by formation of silver-containing granules. X-ray microanalysi
s revealed only silver in most granules; however, some granules also c
ontained sulfur or chlorine.
