The peculiarities of early sediment diagenesis in the Bengel upwelling
zone (Atlantic ocean) are revealed at the base of chemical analysis o
f variable valent chemical elements in sediments involved in redox red
istribution processes. Limits of dissolved component contents in porew
ater are compared with the corresponding flux parameters at the sedime
nt - water interface. Using a stationary diagenesis model of the hydro
gen sulfide distribution in the porewater the sulfate reduction reacti
on rate was calculated. The latter value was found to be in agreement
with reference data. In certain sediments the balance of oxidised and
reduced sulfur forms was found to be constant in the process of sulfat
e reduction in the porewater.
