Environmental risks are a growing public concern in Hungary. The threa
t of contaminated drinking water from abandoned and illegal hazardous
waste disposal sites is receiving increased attention from citizens an
d from the environmental authorities. In respect to the problems of ha
zardous waste disposal, one of the most important objectives of Hungar
ian environmental policy is the enhancement of public health and safet
y. A target of this policy is the reduction of risks associated with t
he disposal of hazardous wastes. This study presents a brief descripti
on of the current situation of hazardous waste management in Hungary.
The study also addresses a risk assessment technique and model for est
imating landfill risks at the first Hungarian hazardous waste disposal
site as Aszod.
