The authors present the wide range of subjects in Indian psychiatriy.
They review in detail the increasing research in questions of social p
sychiatry and introduce into Indian psychoanalysis. The authors stress
the influence of dynamic, social and cultural factors on psychic heal
th and illness. The various results presented in this paper show basic
differences between Eastern and Western psychiatry. The authors try t
o explain transcultural differences in mental illness, its course and
outcome, on the basis of a number of psychodynamic factors: dependence
and autonomy, linguistic competence, cognitive style, material cultur
e, social support and expressed emotions, as well as psychological sop
histication.
