V. Narayan et al., DESIGN OF MULTIMIRROR STRUCTURES FOR HIGH-FREQUENCY BURSTS AND CODES OF ULTRASHORT PULSES, IEEE journal of quantum electronics, 30(7), 1994, pp. 1671-1680
A stack of multiple mirrors may be used to change one short pulse into
a carefully crafted burst with a designed envelope. For example, 800-
GHz bursts, digital pulse codes, and other discrete time signals are r
eported here. The direct design of these structures is problematic. Th
ough linear and causal, their impulse response is nonlinear with respe
ct to the reflection coefficients of the mirrors. However, if we repre
sent the structure's energy transfer laws as a product 2 x 2 scatterin
g matrices then we can determine the reflection coefficients needed to
produce a desired response using a recursive layer-peeling procedure
that bypasses some tedious mathematics.
