An attempt is made to recast a masterpiece in the theory of electromag
netism by the great scientist H. Hertz into modem notations and to sup
ply the derivations of several important equations in the work. By inv
oking the radiation condition in his formulation, an amendment has bee
n made to clarify a criticism addressed to that theory. Also, upon rem
oving the constraint placed on the current distribution in the origina
l theory we have demonstrated a complete union of Hertzs theory of ele
ctromagnetism with Maxwell's theory. The distinct and independent feat
ures of Hertz's theory are emphasized. The importance of this theoreti
cal work by Hertz and its significance appear not to have been fully r
ecognized.
