The magnetic properties of polycrystalline samples of NpAl3, having th
e cubic AuCu3-type structure, have been re-examined by neutron diffrac
tion and Np-237 Mossbauer measurements. They show that, contrary to ea
rlier data (ferromagnetic order at 62.5 K), NpAl3 orders at T(N) congr
uent-to 37 K with a type II AF structure and a saturation Np moment of
about 1.3 mu(B). The ordered moment as well as the induced quadrupola
r interaction are close to the values expected for a GAMMA5 crystal fi
eld ground state of the Np3+ ions. Comparisons are made with the magne
tic behaviour of the AnX3 (An = U, Np) compounds.
