A total of 127 rotifer species is identified from 18 zooplankton sampl
es collected in the North of Papua New Guinea. The description of a hi
therto unknown Scaridium is presented, the taxonomy of Lepadella bilob
a HAUER (n. stat.) discussed. The majority of species found is cosmopo
litan or cosmotropical, some (8 %) are restricted to the tropical and
subtropical regions of the Old World and Notogaea, one was previously
known from Australia only. Rotifer zoogeography is discussed in the li
ght of contemporary taxonomic and faunistic knowledge.
