The mixed ferrocene [MeO(CH2CH2O)3(CH2)3C5Me4]Fe(C5H5) (1), accessible
by reaction of C5H5Li with [MeO(CH2CH2O)3(CH2)3C5Me4]FeCl, is formyla
ted with POCl3/DMF (DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide) to give the ferroceny
l aldehyde [MeO(CH2CH2O)3(CH2)3C5Me4]Fe(C5H4CHO) (2). Compound 2 is re
duced with LiAlH4 to yield the alcohol [MeO(CH2CH2O)3(CH2)3C5Me4]Fe(C5
H4CH2OH) (3), which is an excellent precursor for the unusual a-ferroc
enyl carbocation {[MeO(CH2CH2O)3(CH2)3C5Me4]Fe(C5H4CH2)}+ (A+).
