In a multicenter, international study of 620 adult patients with acute
bacterial bronchitis or acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronc
hitis, the efficacy and safety of a 400-mg once-daily dosage of ceftib
uten was compared with cefaclor 250 mg three times daily. In terms of
both bacteriologic and clinical efficacy, the two treatments were simi
lar, with elimination of the infecting organism in 88% and 87% of pati
ents receiving ceftibuten and cefaclor, respectively. Clinical outcome
was successful in 91% and 92% of patients receiving ceftibuten and ce
faclor, respectively. The pattern of adverse experiences in the two tr
eatment groups was similar, with gastrointestinal effects being most f
requently reported. The results of this study demonstrate the effectiv
eness of once-daily ceftibuten in the treatment of acute bacterial bro
nchitis and acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis and co
nfirm that 400 mg ceftibuten once daily is as effective as 250 mg cefa
clor given three times a day.
