Plesiomonas shigelloides is a rare cause of extraintestinal infections
. We describe a patient who acquired P. shigelloides cellulitis and pu
rulent tenosynovitis of the hand following a catfish spine puncture wo
und, When infection occurs in association with a freshwater-related an
d/or fish-related injury, P. shigelloides should be considered among t
he possible pathogens. Catfish-related injuries are among the most com
mon stinging fish injuries in the Americas [1]. Injuries from catfish
spines occur in fish handlers, and various organisms cause serious inf
ectious complications following such injuries. Among the bacteria caus
ing such infections are Vibrio species, Aeromonas hydrophila, Enteroba
cteriaceae and Pseudomonas species [1]. This report describes a first
case of P. shigelloides soft tissue infection associated with catfish
spine injury.
