Abstract
We present ultrasound damping measurements taken in the vicinity of th e smectic-A-smectic-C transition of 4-n-pentylphenylthiol-4-n'-octylox ybenzoate (8S5BAR). The results obtained, unlike previous measurements taken on the same compound, reveal marked pretransitional effects abo ve the transition. These effects show that the transition is not of th e Landau mean-field type, even though specific-heat, x-ray, and dilato metric measurements suggest this to be the case.
