We report a zero field muSR study of single crystals of the RENi5 ferr
omagnets where RE=Gd, Er, Dy or Tm. Our work points out the strong inf
luence of the crystal electric field on the rare earth total momentum
dynamics: whereas the spin-lattice relaxation process below T(C) is co
ntrolled by a two magnon mechanism for a weakly anisotropic magnet (Gd
Ni5), the phonons drive the relaxation for a strongly anisotropic magn
et such as Er-Ni5. For TmNi5 a comparison is made between the fluctuat
ion time measured by muSR and Tm-169 Mossbauer spectroscopy.
