The reversed-phase liquid chromatographic separation of several hair d
yes (diamimes, aminophenols, phenols, etc.), using mobile phases conta
ining 1,8-diaminoctane as new amine modifier and sodium heptansulfonat
e, is described. The combined effect of the amine and of the alkylsulf
onate enabled very good separation of all the dyes studied. The propos
ed chromatographic system was found to be selective, rugged and theref
ore suitable for the reliable quality control of commercial permanent
colorants. A preliminary solid phase extraction (SPE) procedure using
SCX sorbents, was found useful to enhance detectability of low concent
rated dyes and to isolate phenol compounds from the basic dyes.
