Abstract
SiAlON composites composed of Y-alpha'-SiAlON and beta'-SiAlON were fa bricated by hot-pressing mixtures of Y-alpha'-SiAlON and alpha-Si3N4. The amount of Y-alpha'-SiAlON decreased during sintering. The lattice constant (solubility) of Y-alpha'-SiAlON after sintering depended on t he initial amount of Y-alpha'-SiAlON and was lower than that before si ntering. On the other hand, the lattice constant (solubility) of beta' -SiAlON remained constant. It is thought that Y-alpha'-SiAlON with low er solubility was formed by the reaction between the Y-alpha'-SiAlON a nd alpha-Si3N4.
