The heat transfer and the process of solidification in a billet caster
has been investigated by measurements and by mathematical modelling.
Measurements of heat flux were done in the mould and measurements of s
trand surface temperatures in the secondary cooling region. Oil and ca
sting powder were used as the lubricant. The effect of electromagnetic
stirring on the heat transfer in the mould was also studied. Mathemat
ical simulations were carried out with a heat transfer model. The main
purpose was to get new understanding of the heat extraction from the
billets and thereby to learn to control the strand cooling better. A l
ot of new information has been achieved.
