Abstract
The karyotype of the coelacanth is reported for the first time. Latime ria chalumnae has a 48-chromosome karyotype that contains metacentric, subtelocentric, and telocentric chromosomes as well as microchromosom es. This karyotype is unlike those found in lungfishes but is very sim ilar to the 46-chromosome karyotype of one of the ancient frogs, Ascap hus truei.
