Ll. Hansen et Ae. Larsen, EFFECT OF ANTIBIOTIC FEED ADDITIVES ON THE LEVEL OF SKATOLE IN FAT OFMALE PIGS, Livestock production science, 39(3), 1994, pp. 269-274
The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of the antibiotic feed
additives, Tylosin and Virginiamycin, on skatole levels in fat of ent
ire male pigs and performance. The experimental material consisted of
thirty-one litters each of 3 male pigs. The following treatments were
tested from 60 kg to slaughter at 100 kg live weight: Treatment 1: con
trol feed, without antibiotic feed additive or other growth promoter,
Treatment 2: control feed + 20 ppm Virginiamycin, Treatment 3: control
feed + 20 ppm Tylosin. The pigs were penned individually and fed ad l
ib. until slaughter. There were no significant differences between the
two treatments Virginiamycin and Tylosin and the control treatment fo
r skatole concentration in neckfat (male off-odor) at slaughter, daily
gain, feed conversion ratio and meat percentage.
