Abstract
New syntheses of sterically hindered diarylamines are described ; diar ylaminyl free radicals are formed by oxidation of the parent amines. E lectron acceptor properties of nitro, carbomethoxy and methanesulphony l groups for stabilizing diarylaminyls are discussed. By comparing the life-times of the free radicals and the hyperfine coupling constants in ESR spectra, the mesityl group has been shown to be less stabilizin g than a 3,5-di-t-butylphenyl group.
