The basic features of a procedure for the optimization of the plasma s
cenario in an air core tokamak are presented. The method takes into ac
count the eddy currents in the passive conducting structures. The prob
lem is reduced to the synthesis of a time-varying magnetic field. The
solution of this inverse electromagnetic problem is carried out by mea
ns of an optimization procedure based on the receding horizon approach
. The paper includes an example of application to the ITER tokamak.
