Abstract
An existing finite element program has been extended to use a STEP com patible database for storage and retrieval of model, mesh and solution information. The database system is configured by a data dictionary d erived,from an EXPRESS schema. The database helps to create an open, e xtendable environment and this has been demonstrated by adding stress, thermal and mesh adaption procedures to the existing software.
