Abstract
The general quartic map is studied by symbolic dynamics in the three p arameter space, joints are obtained in terms of the kneading theory. W e describe the skeleton of superstable kneading sequences correspondin g to a joint and all allowed superstable kneading sequences in the kne ading space in details. A criterion for the existence of chaos has bee n given according to the topological entropy.
