Triage, a recently instituted NIH practice in considering grant propos als-whereby applications can be rejected after cursory review and with out reply-is intended to save time as well as reduce the pressure on a nd boost the morale of NIH reviewers. In reality, says pharmacology pr ofessor Jose Musacchio, a former reviewer, little time would be saved and it would be the researchers-specially young ones-who would be demo ralized by the summary, unexplained rejections.
