The title compound, [Cu(C10H24N4)(mu-Cl)ZnCl3], is formed by the react
ion of equimolar amounts of 3-azapentane-1,5-diamine, copper(II) chlor
ide and zinc(II) chloride with excess 4-amino-4-methylpentan-2-one in
methanol. The copper(II) ion is in a square-pyramidal coordination, wi
th the tetradentate triamine mono-imine ligand in the basal plane (the
mean Cu-N distance is 2.005 Angstrom) and a Cl atom of a tetrachloroz
incate ion axially coordinated, with a Cu-Cl distance of 2.6630 (7), a
Cl-Zn distance of 2.3107 (7) Angstrom and a Cu-Cl-Zn angle of 113.14
(2)degrees. The chloro-bridged copper-zinc units are linked by a netwo
rk of N-H ... Cl and C-H ... Cl hydrogen bonds, together with a weak C
u ... Cl interaction, trans with respect to the first, of 3.9362 (7) A
ngstrom, forming layers parallel to the x0z plane of the unit cell.
