This article provides a historical and recent review of the evolution
of hepatic resection for colorectal metastases since World War Il. In
addition, it analyzes the factors that influence survival preoperative
ly, intraoperatively, and postoperatively. It explains the anatomy and
surgical technique required for hepatic resection. It discusses adjuv
ant therapy, intraoperative ultrasonography, regional infusion therapy
, and cryotherapy. Finally, it proposes an algorithm for the evaluatio
n and treatment of hepatic metastasis from colorectal carcinoma.
