Most general and colorectal surgeons deal with anorectal sepsis on a r
egular basis. Certain conditions, however, predispose a person to the
development of more complex anorectal sepsis, in which the treatment i
s much more challenging and controversial. The onset of the AIDS epide
mic has increased the frequency with which sexually transmitted diseas
es of the anorectum are seen. The authors contend that a working knowl
edge of these conditions is essential for all practicing colorectal su
rgeons.
